In most automated manufacturing environments, people have to work close to dangerous equipment. Typical hazards include impact or entrapment that can lead to serious injury or even death. We provide custom manufactured sensors to help avoid risks associated with automated equipment.

These products may be used alone or in conjunction with other safety devices: light curtains, fencing or other rigid barriers may be required for your specific application. We encourage you to contact us to determine how our products can help make your workplace a safer place.

Safety Guidelines for Industrial Safeguarding of Automated
Manufacturing Equipment and Robotic Work Cells

Follow OSHA guidelines Perform a risk assessment to determine safety needs for automated plant equipment Provide personal safety devices Conduct regular safety meetings to educate and remind employees about safety issues

Safety Resources for Manufacturing Environments:
OSHA: Occupational Safety & Health Administration
RIA: Robotic Industries Association

Guarding Entrapment Zones and Pinch Points on Automated Equipment:
Edge Sensors are available in a wide range of dimensions to suit the varied applications found in manufacturing plants. Available in both monitored and non-monitored electrical configurations, these products are suitable for use in a multitude of applications where a touch signal is recommended.

Area Guarding and Perimeter Guarding:
Guardian Mat system signals when an adult steps on the mat. Mats are typically placed on the floor surrounding hazardous locations and may be used in conjunction with fencing or light curtains.

How do Miller Edge sensitized bumpers and edge sensors work?

The sensor itself is housed inside a sealed vinyl cover to protect the internal switching mechanism. Inside the cover is an electrically activated switch made up of two conductive strips, separated by a gap. When the sensor is compressed the conductive elements touch each other. Touching of these conductive strips activates the switch and sends an electrical signal to the motor  controls to stop or reverse operation.

How It Works

Guardian Mat Sensors:
The sensor itself is housed inside a sealed vinyl cover to protect the internal switching mechanism. Inside the cover is an electrically activated switch made up of two “blankets” of conductive Alumaglas®, separated by a gap. When the sensor is compressed the conductive elements touch each other and activates the switch to send an electrical signal to the machine controls to stop or reverse motion.
